Larry Bertlemann, the Titan of Torque, the Sultan of Swivel, the "Rubberman". Larry Bertlemann was the quintessential pioneer of New School surfing. "Anything is Possible" was the mantra he adopted into his mind bending, space aged approach to wave riding. Being an avid skateboarder, Bertlemann brought skateboarding to the water. Visualizing street based maneuvers and adapting them into wave riding was his forte. His skate influenced wave improvisation was a functional mix of low gravity high-g cutbacks, 360's and switch stance surfing. Larry Bertlemann changed the way we ride waves. His Santa Cruz 6'0" twin fin Legend Series pro-model is the epitome of blending the old with the new. A skate influenced contemporary version of the board he rode in the late 70's to early 80's.

G-Deck
With a skateboard like kick tail and a cambered platform deck the G-deck’s foot positions create more power, control, better angles and comfort in tight turning situations. The G-deck has the same amount of board in different more functional places. This design isn’t meant to float any better, but to have a thinner rail with equal volume. The benefits of a thinner rail are that of sensitivity, bite, speed and release. With the G-deck’s platform out near the rail, it still has the needed stability to pull black out inducing G-Force. Our team calls this design the skateboard on water. We call it the G-deck Skywalker. The G-deck is available in three sizes and is made using Santa Cruz’s exclusive Powerlyte EXT technology.

In about a dozen tries Ryan managed to bridge the gap and joined Pat Duffy in the list of street skaters who have stepped up to the Mega Ramp. For the records that's a list of just two. Check the site soon for a video of the day's events.

Congratulations to Volcom team rider Cheryl Maas. Just coming off a first place slope-style win at the Vans Cup she continues her momentum by taking the US Open Big Air Girl’s Title. She took the win with a frontside 3, backside 5 and a huge backside 7 tail, which also won her the $2500 “Sick Trick” award.
Cheryl’s solid performance over the week at the US Open scored her the Most Valuable Rider award, which landed her a brand new Volvo. Not bad for a week of riding!
Next on Cheryl’s agenda is the Chicken Jam at Mammoth and then Ms Superpark at June. She’s on a roll…. Yeah Cheryl
Stratton, VT, USA - March 21st, 2008: After a full-out season of close calls and flawless victories, US snowboarder Kevin Pearce charged through the opposition, defeating his challengers and rising to the occasion to become the new 07/08 Men’s Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour Champion.
Kevin Pearce (Volcom), a Vermont native, was crowned at 04.30 pm U.S. EST at the base of Stratton Mountain in front of a mass of spectators applauding and cheering his achievement. Reto Lamm, President of the Swatch TTR World Tour, presented the Swatch TTR award – a 20-kilo metal and wood, custom made trophy for Pearce.
Kevin had one of the best season records in TTR history; his pursuits for the Swatch TTR Title beginning all the way back in August. A string of victories and podium finishes throughout the season brought him all the way to the top and he entered the 6-Star Burton US Open highly favoured.
His efforts began with a second place in the Halfpipe at the 5-Star Abominable Snow Jam in Mt. Hood, Oregon. Although he struggled in New Zealand, Pearce entered the Northern Hemisphere portion of the Tour in full force, dropping a huge Cab 1260 to win the 6-Star Nokia Air & Style in Munich/Germany. His success continued on the other side of the world in Japan, where Pearce finished fourth at the 6Star Nissan X-Trail Jam amidst a field of riders that had certainly stepped up their game since Munich.
Pearce’s streak of title victories was then unleashed in Laax / Switzerland at the 6-Star Burton European Open in a Halfpipe final that blew away every rider and spectator. Legendary Halfpipe rider Shaun White had laid down what was thought to be an unbeatable run and with the final run of the entire competition, Kevin Pearce proved to the world that he is right up there beside the best snowboarders in the world. Jaw’s dropped and voices were left speechless as Pearce began with a 10 right out of the gate straight into a second 10, followed by back-to-back 9s into a gargantuan Mctwist and ending with a stylish straight air. His run earned him the HP Title as he set his eyes on to Innsbruck /Austria.
At the 5-Star Billabong Air & Style Quarterpipe, Kevin once again dominated, claiming his second straight title. But he wouldn’t stop there. After winning last year’s Arctic Challenge in Oslo / Norway, Pearce went on to win his second consecutive 6-Star Oakley Arctic Challenge, stomping huge BS Airs, his epic Mctwists and a newly honed BS Rodeo 5. After his victory in Oslo, Pearce overtook Risto Mattila from Finland for the Tour lead.
The 6-Star Burton US Open however, was Kevin Pearce’s time to shine. With a 25% point bonus in both Slopestyle and Halfpipe, Pearce didn’t back down and drove it home to become the 07/08 Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour Champion and taking home $ 50 000 USD. Kevin qualified for the Halfpipe finals right behind Shaun white. Stomping huge 9s, 10s, solid straight Airs and his massive McTwist, Pearce finished third in the US Open Halfpipe with an epic run, earning his first ever Swatch TTR Tour Title.

Cheryl Maas (Volcom)
After coming off a podium finish at the rail jam Cheryl went on to win the girl’s Slopestyle event the following day. She had a clean run finishing it with a backside 7 which undoubtedly landed her in first. This was a huge accomplishment for Cheryl being the first US Snowboarding event she’s won. Cheryl has been on a role this year, winning the European Chicken Jam as well as just recently winning MBM’s (Monster Backside Magazine / Top European Snow Magazine) female rider of the year award!
I-pod (Volcom, Santa Cruz)
Russian/Swiss protégée, Iouri Podladtchikov aka I-pod or I-phone due to his new cellular device, placed 3rd in the men’s pipe contest with an ever-impressive run! Must have been his new outfit or board graphics?

The fine folks at Omatic Snowboards are happy to announce their latest Swedish acquisition Hampus Mosseson to the team. Not only do we appreciate fine furnishings from Ikea, gourmet meatballs, the chef from the Muppets and little red gummy fish but also Scandinavian super rippers like Hampus. For those of you who live under a rock, Hampus has proved himself in a slew of high dollar contests including the Air and Style. He helped usher in the whole “ fun” fad in snowboarding by being one of the original Robot Food stars. He locked in solid video parts with Mack Dawg and basically rips everything he rides in an efficient manner. “At Omatic, we believe that a rider must fit within the company,” says co-owner and rider Todd Richards. That means he must enjoy bad jokes, can endure pungent human scents, talk smack and endure long car rides with team psychologist Todd Richards. Hampus is a perfect fit! “It feels like an energy boost from one of those energy drinks when it’s just about to kick in,” says newly signed Hampus Mosseson. As we prepare for world domination, Hampus is ready to tap into his Swedish heritage and shred and pillage his way across the globe, making sure that his O-Matic keeps him on top of his game, slashing from continent to continent.
VOLCOM STONE'S $10,000 KICKFLIP-OFF!!!
Thu 31 Jan 2008 07:30 CET
OFFICIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR VOLCOM STONE'S $10,000 KICKFLIP-OFF CONTEST! READ CAREFULLY!
To date, no one has ever documented a cleanly landed kickflip on a surfboard. Volcom is giving away $10,000 to the first person that can land a “proper” kickflip while surfing! By proper we mean an “above the lip” kickflip where first you launch an air, use your front foot to flip the board, and then land on it and ride out cleanly. No backwash, no fingerflips, no grabs, no laybacks. Just a proper kickflip. We’re going to be strict on these following guidelines. The rules are all listed here, so get out there and put this trick in the history books. Good luck!
Rules: 1. Your entry must be on video from the start of the trick through the ride out. No photos allowed. 2. This contest is open to everyone. The contest begins today November 21st, 2007, and will run until there's a winner. 3. The kickflip must be a real air “above the lip” – No backwash, No chop hops, or anything in the flats or below the lip of the wave. 4. All waves must be self caught – You must paddle into the wave. This means NO tow-ats, step-offs, jetskis, boats, dinghys, winches, canoes, oars, helicopters, dolphins or assistance of any kind. 5. No grabs of any kind. Not before, not after, not during. 6. You must completely “ride out” of the kickflip. That means if you land on the back of the wave and fail to continue surfing the wave – it’s not a make! 7. No heelflips. Or else we’d have called it the Heelflip-Off. 8. No shoes. Who surfs in shoes anyway? Regular “made for surfing” booties are acceptable. 9. You must be riding a surfboard with at least one fin. No boogie boards, wakeboards, wakeskates, skimboards, kiteboards, trays etc.
***Check out some footage of Ozzie Wright's near-makes
Make sure to send in your own footage of your attempts and close calls. We will post the attempts on the youtube kickflip-off page so all can see.
How to Enter: Go to www.volcom.com
Entry form must be printed out and sent with footage to: Volcom's Kickflip-Off 1740 Monrovia Ave Costa Mesa, CA 92627
*All kickflip entries are subject to verification and review by Volcom. No video tampering please. Let's make this legit!

In May, Volcom launched a worldwide artshow tour and 60-page comic book in support of the biggest Volcom Featured Artist Series line ever.
The project was born from our love of the underground comic movement and looked to capture its raw energy and low-fi means by creating a comic book that is authentic down to the paper stock and page count.
The comic book was over two years on the making and features legendary skateboard artists Jim Phillips and VCJ as well as some of the biggest creative contributors to skateboarding today - Michael Sieben, Todd Bratrud and Travis Millard. In addition to skate-art heavyweights the book features artists/athletes from the worlds of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding such as Mark Appleyard, Ozzie Wright, and Jamie Lynn.
The art show series will begin May 19th at Fuse gallery in New York City and will continue through the summer with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and London. The openings will include drawings by all Holiday 2007 Volcom Featured Artists, as well as scribblings by all twenty-eight artists that contributed to the book. There will be artists in attendance and a limited number of t-shirts and books to be given away for free at each opening reception. Volcom will be producing fifteen thousand copies of the comic for free, with worldwide distribution.
